Jewish Fine Art

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of Fine Art related to Jewish artists and/or particular Jewish experiences or events. These date from the 17th century to the 1990s. This collection includes paintings, prints, etchings, pastels, mixed media and watercolours. It contains 'Jews in a synagogue' by Rembrandt and a painting titled 'The Rabbi', made after Rembrandt. Works from the 20th century include Benno Schotz's wooden sculpture of Ura Collins – a Jewish refugee he met in Glasgow, which was made in 1926, and limited edition copies of 14 original pen and ink works created in the 1930s by Glasgow Jewish artist Jeffay which depict Jewish life in Warsaw. There is also a selection of artwork created in response to the horrors of the Jewish Holocaust. Marianne Grant's works, in particular, draw on her personal experiences of the ghettos and the death camps of Eastern Europe. Recent work in the collection includes two paintings by Dora Holzhandler – 'The Sabbath Candles' and 'The Wedding Night' – and charcoal and pastel drawings by Myer Lacome, an artist who was the Principal of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. These drawings, gifted to the museum in 2001, were all produced since 1990 and cover pre-War Germany, Nazi Germany and post-War neo-Nazi activity in Europe. Three 'memory boxes' representing the Holocaust were also purchased from Lacome. The collection also contains photographs and oral archives relating to Marianne Grant as well as interviews with Myer Lacome, Benno Schotz, and the family of Ura Collins.
